Weekend at the Races

Feel the irony in the title… I just watched the American Idol: Queen Edition tonight. Wasn’t blown away by anyone, but come on, there’s only one Freddy Mercury. Well, there was one, then he died and Paul Rogers now tours with the band. What’s up with that? But that’s not why I’m here…
My Dad and my brother and myself did our yearly thing and went out to Long Beach to watch the races. 3 days of sitting out in the sun watching cars go by. Sounds boring, but it’s not. We really have fun picking our cars and cheering them on. This year was the first for our new Canon 20D camera and I had fun with it. There’s plenty of material there! My favorite shot is pictured here, but there are many more on flickr.
Hockey Tryouts for… Anyone?

Even if you don’t like hockey or sports at all, you should read on as this really interesting article shot across my RSS reader yesterday.
Seems the Montreal Canadians were holding a practice in a building that wasn’t their unual practive facility. A handful of minor league hockey players were there and some fans to watch. This is all pretty normal. Where it gets weird is at a point where the action was down at the other end of the rink, some guy in full hockey gear jumped over the boards with a stick and a puck a skated in on Montreal’s goalie Jose Theodore… amazingly Theodore stayed in the net and rose to the challenge!
The skater, who turns out to be some minor leaguer out to prove his skills against the big boys, was stopped on his first attempt with a poke-check, but then he gathered the puck in and skated in for a second attempt, a wrister to the glove side that Theodore easily turned away.
“I didn’t really know what was going on until the guy came on,” a grinning Theodore said. “He came at me with his head down so I just wanted to say ‘Welcome to the big boys.’ I poke-checked him to say, `You have to keep your head up.’ When he came back, I thought about going out of the net and not playing into his game, but then I thought he had the [courage] to go on the ice, so I let him have a free shot at me.”
The man wasn’t arrested, but he was escorted out of the practice. I guess it gave everyone a good laugh.
I’m pretty amazed they were so friendly about all of this. I think in other sports the guy would have been hospitalized, and before this happened I would have thought hockey would yield the same result. You can read the whole story here. And you can find teh video on the CNN Video page.
NHL Academy!

This site rules. In a few short steps, I was able to learn everything I needed to know about how to be a successful NHL player. Any minute now the phone will ring with an NHL scout on the other end, offering me a position with a pro team. how did I learn this so quick, you ask? Why, NHL Academy, of course!
