New Look

As promised I spent some time over the weekend to change the look of my site a bit. I used some ideas that I had from a few designs ago and a template that I found online and put them all together to get what you see here. It’s not done though… oh no… it’s never done. But it’s over 50% so it’s worth launching.

WordPress 2.5 was a pretty big leap. Or at least it feels that way. Rumor has it 2.6 will build off of these changes and be ever more cool. Can’t wait!

I’ve just updated the site to WordPress 2.5 and the theme I was using wasn’t hip to it. So I have a temporary one that I hope to not have for too long.

While we await the arrival of our new bundle of joy, I’ve had some time off of work to get some things done. Well, not every day… today I sat around a lot. I did set up the cool baby intercom thing and played some Rock Band. I really just looked up at the time on my screen and realized it was Saturday. Where did that week go?

I’m spending some of the time I’m waiting building a few web sites. One is for me and two are for others. I’m using WordPress for two of them and I always find cool new stuff when I filter through the community to update the plugins I usually use. For example…

WPhone, or WordPress Phone is a very cool plugin that put your WordPress admin interface in the palm of your hand. It’s a must use if you like blogging on the go. It works beautifully on the iPhone and it says it works on other mobile phones too. Take a look at it here.
TinyMC, which is the WYSIWYG editor for wordpress is something I’m looking into to develop my own button for so that I can have an easy way to embed photos and use that cool lightwindow effect. I’m trying to borrow (i.e., hack) from this plugin to accomplish this.
ms_lightwindow is the plugin I just mentioned which I’ve modified a little to use on this site here. You have to do some manual work for this one (until I can get that custom button done), but it’s worth it. That’s here.

In other blogging news, I understand you poor saps who are using Internet Explorer don’t see this site as it should and that’s a shame. This theme that I’m using has a few problems with the IE so it might be time to change it up again. So sad. But change is good!

My last three posts are all accidentally connected. First the iPhone post, then I talk about cell phone coverage (bar strength), then I talk about bar codes! Must…break…streak….

Oh here’s something unrelated! Someone went and re-created that classic and addicting game Lemmings… all in DHTML! It runs pretty well too. Go play!

Retired T-shirts?

Once more I’m going to try to trumpet change re: my blog. This time in a somewhat off-the-shelf theme. Sure I couldn’t leave it completely alone and it’s been tweaked some, but for the most part it’s “out of the box.” Does this spell the end of the T-shirts? Only time will tell. As for the new choice, I’ve purposefully made an effort to go with a darker theme to do my part to save the world. Expect more tweaks to come in the near future. Let me know what you think.

Yeah, it’s 2006 and all that, but on Dec 26th, WordPress 2.0 came out, and it’s pretty snazzy. I have built what seems like a half-dozen new sites in the past few months (did I mention judyludy.com went live?) and for the last few I was able to create them with this new version of WordPress. For all the grimy details, check out this article. There’s a whole slew of new stuff included in the new version. Dare I say something for everyone? I would have liked to seen a better thumbnailer/photo posting mechanism build into the new WYSIWYG editor, but it’s got the beginnings of what I’m after for some of the HTML-challenged people that I create sites for. Maybe a plug-in will get it the rest of the way.

My own experience was that you really need to back everything up before you do anything if you have any data in your site that you’d like to ever see again. Upgrading this site was the hardest, as it has the most data, the most modifications to the wordpress code, and the most plug-in dependency (still don’t have the theme-switcher working again yet). I actually upgraded two blogs, everything went swimmingly so I figured I’d try mine. …not so swimmingly. But things are back up now and ready for a whole new year of bloggin’ action!
