Weekend in the Pacific Northwest

My first paying gig as a photographer was last night. The 50th wedding anniversary for my buddy Tim’s parents. There were probably 50-60 people there at a restaurant lounge in the hills of Portland. It was really a good time — good food, drinks, company, and even entertainment! Tim and his high school pals performed a variety of 50’s tunes (with Tim on sax and some vocals) and everyone danced and sang along. Monique came along and we borrowed an extra camera body (Canon 10D) and she and I did all the shooting, while Shana was on video duty.
As for the photography, it was pretty challenging venue. The entire wall facing Portland was made up of windows, back-lighting every photo taken that direction. Then there was the issue of lighting — the place was very dimly lit and the ceiling was not even so bounce flashes weren’t always an option. Even with these challenges, I think we came away with some really great shots. I’ll be going through the 400-some shots we took and putting together an album for the happy couple in the coming days.
Today I’m hanging out at my mom’s place in Vancouver. It’s certainly an extra perk to be able to see my family while we’re here.
Fatburger is Still Great

Today I was working out of our Glendale office and I met Cary for lunch. We drove to Fatburger in Woodland Hills to have some good eats. The bad news is the fries were cold. The good news is the burger was great, and the shake was even better. Per tradition, there was a jukebox there — but this one was wall-mounted, had a touch screen, and it was FREE! So I tested it’s catalog and found it had a pretty wide variety of music. The first three songs I put in were songs I have never heard in a public jukebox before:
1. I Think I’m going Bald by Rush
2. Cross-eyed Mary by Jethro Tull
3. Joining a Fanclub by Jellyfish
That’s some jukebox!
Picked Up A New Lens

Last night (Wednesday) I had a good Craig’s List experience. I’ve heard some horror stories about people selling/buying things on there so I figured I’d post about a good transaction. I’ve had the Canon 28-135 EF IS USM lens on my Amazon wishlist for about a year. With the Europe trip coming up I figured I shoudl go ahead and pull the trigger on it myself. The best deals were on used lenses, and Craig’s List had the best of the used prices. So for a mere $300 bones I was able to buy it from an amateur photographer in Westminster. Ironically, he purchased it just before his Honeymoon, also to London and Paris! He was a really nice guy, and the lens is awesome. Not only was he $40 under the lowest price I’d seen, but he also threw in a UV filter! Cool!
