Trying new things

One of the consultants at work was talking about their browser preferences, and he mentioned Mozilla. Which, up until that point I thought was the same as Netscape, which I tend to loathe (okay okay, 6.2 is a heck of a lot better than anything previous, but it’s still not great). So anyway, he explained to me that Mozilla was not Netscape, but what Netscape would probably base it’s next browser on. Long story short, he convinced me to give it a shot. So that night I downloaded it from Mozilla.org and loaded me some web pages to test her out. The first flash site I got to (one of mine) prompted me to download flash, like a good little browser. So I clicked “OKAY, gimme it!” and I was downloading flash right then and there. Turns out the newest version of flash down’t work with Mozilla unless oyu download a certain installer. Same is true for a lot of common plug-ins. So there’s a bummer.

All in all, I liked Mozilla. But some drawbacks that will keep me surfin with IE for awhile are: no Yahoo Companion support, no MS Intellimouse button support, it’s pretty slow to launch, and no Google Toolbar (someone’s working on a hack for it, but it’s all buggy). On the plus side, the interface was nice and clean, it didn’t try to install a million things like Netscape likes to do, and the bookmarks are pretty easy to manage, including no problem with nested folders and bookmarks in your links bar, like in IE.

If you’re itching for a change, and don’t mind a few quirks, try it out.
