I was gonna use the build in "Int. Record" feature on my old Sony handycam, but it, like you described yours being, is very limits and can't just capture 1 frame. So I used my laptop and an app called iStop Motion which I've goofed off with many times before. For some reason it couldn't use my HD camera for a source (lame!) but it did work with my old Sony.
