Retired T-shirts?

shirts.jpgOnce more I’m going to try to trumpet change re: my blog. This time in a somewhat off-the-shelf theme. Sure I couldn’t leave it completely alone and it’s been tweaked some, but for the most part it’s “out of the box.” Does this spell the end of the T-shirts? Only time will tell. As for the new choice, I’ve purposefully made an effort to go with a darker theme to do my part to save the world. Expect more tweaks to come in the near future. Let me know what you think.

I think the new design looks sharp, but saving the world should be a secondary motivation, at best, for the style switch. The difference in how much it’s costing YOU, and how much you like the look, should be more primary reasons. The savings mentioned at the site you link to are minor. I bet that you probably wouldn’t notice a reduction in your electricity bill even if the entire Internet were to switch to dark themes.

Aside from this, I’m not convinced that by merely using energy we are destroying the world. (And to the rebuttal: I don’t think that using bright themes can be classified as wasting energy.)

There are more effective ways to reduce energy consumption, such as using Compact Flourescent bulbs:

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

So stick with the new theme, if you like it (as I do), but by all means don’t feel guilty if you switch back to the bright theme. And don’t feel guilty for using flickr, Google, and any other site that uses a bright theme. They aren’t destroying the world, and you’re not complicit in any kind of environmental abuse.

The colors are nice and I like the two column approach better than the three. The theme is nice with the date block on the side.

Yeah, saving the world was certainly a secondary benefit of a theme — of course, I have to like the layout and style (and I do!). I’m not going to go into a long explanation about saving energy and all that. But I certainly wasn’t thinking of saving myself money. Heck, I use LCDs, not CRTs anyway. Just thought the Google fact was fascinating.

By the way, every bulb in our house except those which are on dimmers or are in the line of site is an energy saver. We just got more energy efficient windows as well. :)

I like the font for your name. Will it always have the firefox logo? I’m not sure yet.

Wow, Shana, that Firefox logo was ugly. It was only on Internet Explorer too. I hope they’re forcing you to use that because it’s of the devil and you should stop using it if you can. :)

It should be gone now, but the new site doesn’t look as good in IE as it does in any other browser.

Yes - Joe! Now that I’m on my beloved MAC and not at work, the banner is gone. Oh - by the way, Curly - why is doing something good secondary to anything :)? Good for you Joe. And thank you for letting me know that there is a way to use less engery in this way. That’s incredibly intersting. Every little bit- bulbs, recycling, all of it is for the good!

Like the new look…although I miss the “Ferrari” theme!!! Change is good, just check out the Drive - I change themes like I change my socks…until I find one I like. Here’s to my lower energy bills!

Speaking of Ferrari, how about that new shade of red? It didn’t help them in Monaco, but I love the look! Go Massa!

    Shana,

I’m not suggesting we relegate “the good” to second place . . . just that the things we can do to protect the environment can be arranged in a hierarchy, and that website style changes rank low in that order. So low, that I would imagine there would be no detectable difference to the environment, even if the whole internet went to black themes. But I’m not against recycling, nor against saving energy (and money). Most of my clothes come from the thrift shop! Monday I got two nice shirts and a blue curtain hanging for my kitchen window, all for $7.04 after tax.
