“Tech support, this is Joe”

A lot of you may be in the same boat I’m in. When a family member or friend needs a helping hand with something computer-related, they call me. My sister just got a new computer, and needed to get all of the stuff off of the old one into the new one, if you’ve upgraded, you know how that goes. Normally I’d make a house-call, but in this case I couldn’t. She lives a few states away. So along comes Windows XP to save the day.
Windows XP comes with this cool “Ask for Remote Assistance” feature, where you can ask someone else to take over control of your computer from a remote location. Gee, no wonder they called it that. So after talking her through removing the hard drive from the old system, and putting it in the new one (this went a lot smoother than I thought it would, thank God) we connected and I took control. I was able to migrate all the vital documents, and all is well now. So I’ll throw a rare “Thank you” in the general direction of Bill Gates for finally incorporating a PC Anywhere-ish kinda thing into his OS.
Now my sis is all set up with a new PC! She went from a Pentium 166 (with 16MB of memory if you can believe it) to a P4 2.0 GHz with 512MB! That’s quite a leap. Needless to say I expect to see her online more!
