I’m Caught Up On Movies

Netflix? Nope. Visiting family up North was a veritable movie-fest. I watched 15 movies in 10 days! Here they are in no particular order:
1 Madagascar
2 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
3 Loves Comes Softly
4 Titanic*
5 Fantastic Four
6 Bullworth
7 The Last Samurai*
8 The Polar Express
9 John Denver & the Muppets: Rocky Mountain Holiday*
10 Mr. and Mrs. Smith
11 Clerks*
12 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang*
13 Robots
14 The Polar Express (again)
15 That Thing You Do*
Needless to say there were kids present during most of these, and only a few were watched after the wee ones were in bed. The ones with the asterisks were ones I had seen before.
Out of the ones that were new to me, I really don’t think any of them were must sees that I would recommend, but instead they were all middle of the road type deals which were watchable. Madagascar’s singing and dancing muskrat king guy was pretty funny, and Polar Express is a pretty good Holiday staple for the chillin. Polar Express’ animation has gotten a bad wrap, with critics saying that it’s trying to hard to be life-like and comes off as spooky. I found myself thinking that at first too, but it’s not something that gets in the way of the story, and kids don’t seem to mind it.
Monday night Monique and I watched “Down from the Mountain” which is a live concert/documentary kinda thing about the music that helped make “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” a great movie. After receiving that soundtrack as a gift last year, and watching this DVD last night, I think the Bluegrass genre has recently slid into the “likes” column of my musical taste.
Have some imdb.com links, will ya?

1 Madagascar – I thought is was okay but it was a lot of fun for Jaden.
2 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – This is my favorite book out of the series but had mixed feelings about the movie. Overall, I liked it but felt they changed and rearranged things poorly.
3 Loves Comes Softly – never saw it.
4 Titanic* – All the boat stuff is spectacular, the story… well not so much.
5 Fantastic Four – didn’t see it
6 Bullworth – good movie
7 The Last Samurai* – not too shabby
8 The Polar Express – haven’t seen it
9 John Denver & the Muppets: Rocky Mountain Holiday* – rockin’!
10 Mr. and Mrs. Smith – Fun summer mindless fun plus some nice things to look at in there
11 Clerks* – Great, a classic
12 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* – another classic!
13 Robots – it was ok
14 The Polar Express (again) – still haven’t seen it
15 That Thing You Do* – never saw it

January 5th, 2006 at 7:02 pmSaw King Kong with my mom and Erv the other day. Really cool–but if they expect me to believe that Kong was trying to communicate the abstract concept of “beautiful” to Naomi Watts, as they both looked at the sunrise, that is a bridge too far. I will believe stampeding dinos but not language-endowed apes.

January 6th, 2006 at 10:38 amI was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed The Polar Express which I just saw for the first time a week ago. I wasn’t aware of any criticism about the animation and I didn’t think anything of it. Thinking about it now, it was pretty cool actually.
All of us except the baby saw the Narnia movie and really enjoyed it (my son and I have been back to see it again). I’m biased, though, I grew up loving the books and so this whole series is special to me.
I would like to see King Kong, but don’t see a chance to do that in the theaters on the horizon.
