Apple’s Latest Announcement

A few days ago Apple announced another revision to its iPod line, iMac G5, and iTunes. All are pretty cool. For those who missed it, the new “full sized” iPod now can play video, and the new version of iTunes has a music store in it that sells music videos and even some TV show episodes for $1.99 each. This first step at ushering in the Video-casting or”Vlogging” era is a great one, and I’m sure it’ll just grow from there. The only thing that let a little air out of the balloon with these announcements it that they were long overdue. Not to say these gadgets aren’t freakin awesome and that I don’t want every single one of them, but video on a ipod has been talked about for over a year. Glad to see it’s finally here, and can’t wait to see where it goes.

One of the annoucements that I was pretty impressed with, even though it was also long overdue in my mind, was this software on the new iMac called “Front Row” — this little app lets you watch/listen to DVDs, Videos, Music, and Photos all from a really slick menu. Now of course, this isn’t a unique idea, and all you gadgeteers out there know you can get this functionality on a stand alone Tivo these days, not to mention this and more functionality with a Microsoft Windows Media PC. But it’s great to see Apple thinking this way and getting into this arena. I can’t wait to see how Front Row evolves. It’s also not a stand-alone app, you can only run it on the iMac G5 that it comes on. I imagine this is because it needs the G5′s horsepower to run the slick menus and stuff, but I bet it becomes an autonomous app sooner or later, and probably with more bells and whistles too!

Any way you slice it Apple seems to be making progress with their product. It’s nice to see them grow and have such a following. the iPod may hav saved them, but I believe that it’s everything else they create that makes them that much more appealing an option.

Go buy a mac.

It was a good week at Apple. The new iPod is killer. I think I might ask Santa for one of those instead of a nano. The iMac is slick, especially that Front Row software and all the built in goodies, including the camera for video conf. I will, however, be waiting until next year before purchasing a new Mac…Intel chips!

You’re not alone. I’ll be holding off on upgrading my PowerMac G4 until the new chips come out too. Although we’ll see how much I can stand my desktop when the MacIntels first hit. I’d prefer not to by the first rev of them, but at that point I may not hve a choice. My computer will be nearly 4 years old. It’s a trooper and it’s hangin in there nicely, but we’ll see how long that lasts.
