Portillo’s Hot Dogs

I’m in a big ole lunch coma right now, courtesty of Orange County’s newest restaurant. Portillo’s Hot Dogs is an authentic Chicago eatery that has made its way out west. In fact, this Portillo’s is the only one that isn’t in Illinois. Anwyay, the Grand Opening today and a friend at work, who is from Chicago, insisted we go. I’m glad he did!
For those of you that have been to The Hat and had the great pastrami sandwiches, you’ll be right at home at Portillo’s. The food is very hearty and there’s plenty of chicago style food to choose from. I had a chili dog and half of a “Big Beef” sandwich with sweet peppers. Yum! The price is right too… 3 of us ate on $26 and we ordered enough for 5.
It’s located on the North side (ha!) of Buena Park Mall in, you guessed it, Buena Park. There’s a drive-thru as well if you wanna skip the ambiance.
Check out the photos of our lunch on flickr.

October 11th, 2005 at 11:16 pmYou would have to ask! Naw, nothing soy at this place. Although they had a really nice salad bar (although I didn’t actually see anyone eat from it) where you can get something called a “Garbage Salad” that is apparently “a Chicago thing.”
Mexican? what?

October 12th, 2005 at 8:51 amBoy do I feel like a complete idiot!. I read the first line saw the word ole and somehow got it in my mind that there was a Mexican bent to the restaurant. Of course, a bit of critical thinking would have led me in the direction of Mexican hot dogs in Chicago? I dont think so! Glad to know about the salad bar, although I must say a garbage salad has a funny ring to it..

October 14th, 2005 at 1:36 amOnce or twice a month I play at a church in Buena Park. Last time I was over there I happened to drive by the mall and saw the place under construction. I’ll have to stop by next time I’m in the neighborhood.

October 16th, 2005 at 8:04 pmRich and I had lunch at Portillo’s on Friday. We both had the Italian Beef sandwich. And, I’ve got to admit, it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. I’m usually one for all of the trimmings when it comes to sandwiches (lettuce, tomatoes, etc…), but honestly this meat and bread simplicity was something to cheer about. And as far as salads go, the ladies next to me were both having one and they looked amazing!!!
