Hard Drive Go BOOM!

Yup, my system drive crashed last night on my main desktop system (G4 Dual 1GHz MMD Powermac). What a bummer! I’ve only had one previous hard drive crash and that wasn’t a drive that I was using as a system drive at the time, so it wasn’t much data loss. This one had a lot of great stuff on it that I have mostly backed up, but not recently enough not to cause a headache. I’ve called a local repair shop and they’re estimating it may cost $150 to fix. The problem is the drive doesn’t have power, and the tech suspects that the controller board is bad on it. He plans to replace the controller board on my drive with one from a similar drive, and power it up. Hopefully there’s no damage to the platters that house the data. I have enough stuff I care about on that drive to make the effort to get it recovered. The sucky part is I’m without my main computer for a few days. I’ll be using our laptop in the meantime.

Bummer . . . keeping my fingers crossed for ya! When I’m working on a paper I absolutely cannot lose, I print it out 4 pages per sheet before going to bed. Before I got my printer I would take digital pix of the screen, just in case.

Weird, I just had three hard drives (two which were a RAID array) go “boom” last week at work. And we got Ants last night…stop with the voodoo already okay?

Ain’t American? Macs headquarters are in the the great state of California! They get a lot more done there then those folks up in Washington (not as many rain days).

The ants must have left our place and headed for Dan’s. Sorry Dan!

And of course, that drive thing wasn’t mac issue. It’s an IBM drive for cryin’ out loud. I bought a new drive and put a new installation of the OS on it and stayed up half the night on Monday night installing apps. I still need to get the data recovered off of the busted drive though since as the days go by I realize how much stuff I need that was on there.
