It’s an Ant Invasion!

I guess it comes with the heat, but them suckers are all over the place. Well, not really all over, the walls aren’t moving or anything. But we’ve got ants and that sucks. So we go to the store and while we’re there we think, oh yeah we should get ant killin’ stuff. Unfortunately we’re at Vons, and they don’t have the greatest selection of ant removal gear. They do, however, have a few flavors of raid so we picked some up. Why do they have different kinds of raid ant killer anyway? They all should do the same thing. Buy this one to kill ants… but buy THIS one for four bucks more if you REALLY want the ants to die. When I think of how I work in a marketing world, I’m so glad it’s not for something like ant killer.

So back to the poison: I’ve found the Ortho stuff works best, but they didn’t have any of that at Vons, so we picked a flavor of Raid and gave that a shot. Seems to be working okay. The ants are coming back every few days, but in smaller numbers. Soon we will win the war!

(in honor of this post, I’m listening to Ant Invasion by Chip and Drifty right now… and finishing off some cheese)

We got so fed up with using all the different sprays (plus we didn’t want the stuff around when Jaden started crawling) that we finally broke down and bought one of those electronic devices that you plug into a outlet which confuses the hell out of them and sends them to somebody elses house and we’ve been ant free for two years now!

Chip & Drifty, eh? Never heard of ‘em. We have yet to be invaded this summer, but we ant-proof the crap out of our kitchen. In fact, we haven’t had a lick of food in the kitchen for going on four years now. We store it all in the car, along with a bunsen burner and some wine. Seems to work.

I hate ants. We woke up one morning years ago and hundreds were in the kitchen all over the walls. We had a leak and didn’t know it! Sprays will help, but make sure you keep the sink clean and the counters clean. I noticed that they die out faster if you give them no reason to come in! Good luck!

They’ve actually not ventured into the kitchen. Weird. I’ve never really had ants before. Except a couple years ago they were all over the backyard. That’s when I tried that Ortho stuff and it seemed to work pretty well. Are they usually in the kitchen? They dig the food, I guess? They’ve been mostly in our master bathroom, which needs some TLC since the sing has a clog in it. Maybe that’s got something to do with it. I was blaming the heat! They’re note really around anymore, and I hope that was the last of them.

I tried Ortho but it gave me the worst rash, I kid you not. Oh, y’all don’t have ants in your pants? Nevermind . . .

When I was younger I used to kill them with WD-40. Added benifit of that was it made all of the sidewalks shiny and slippery.

Since I live in Albuquerque and it is a desert we have tons of ants. They bug the heck out of me. This is the second summer we have lived here and we are doing battle again with the ants. Becky and I have bought some of those Ant Hotels (the kind where they take the bait back to there nest, and it kills the queen). These have been working really well this year. Since the beginning of summer we have only had one invasion. The thing I hate is you have to let the ants get the bait for a day or two but then they stop coming. Yeah!

Being here more than four years now, every summer when it gets hot we can predict where they will attack. We started getting them last week, also. Same places as last summer. So we kind of have a system down to keep them at bay… at the start of summer, we go to the Reptile Haus and get some of those big ant-eating tarantulas. We set ‘em up in the pantry, the master bathroom, the kids’ bathroom, and the kitchen. They do a good job and we usually forget they’re there. But come Christmas when it’s cold, we can’t ever find them and we have to buy new ones the next summer. Gotta go… my 5-year-old just walked in saying something about monsters in his closet. Ah, the kids and their night-time phobias.
