Back to Entourage…

A couple of weeks ago I switched from Entourage as a Mail client, address book, and calendar to the Apple stuff: Mail, Address Book, and iCal (all win the “no duh!” award for their names). I liked what I saw for the mail app (especially the junk mail filter, that rocks), and address book (the little photos are cool), although Mail can use a little upgrade as far as attachments and HTML e-mails go. The big weakness in this trio is the cohesiveness between them, this is more the fault of iCal being brand spankin new than anything else, the other two haven’t had much time to adjust to iCal being around.
iCal is in it’s first version, and it shows. There were some big things that were forgotten that go far and above working with the other apps. For example, there’s no snooze button on the message alerts for meetings, these same messages don’t come up all of the time (no reliability there!), when the message reminder DOES pop-up, it doesn’t update itself, so if it pops up reminding you of something that’s happening tomorrow, it’ll continue to say “Tomorrow” even after tomorrow is today, plus it needs more color choices for calendars. On the plus side, it’s cool to subscribe to other people’s calendars. Having all of the Sharks’ games in there was cool.
The ideal thing would have been to unleash a whole new version of each app, all of which knew of each other’s existence and played all nice together. Oh well, I’m sure that day will come, and maybe that day I’ll change ditch Entourage, but for now, it’s what works best for me. I couldn’t see using ONE of those apps until all of them are ready for prime time.
