E3 invites a tough decision

For those of you that are looking to upgrade your gaming console this year, or maybe buy a new one. Sony is making it a difficult decision between the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, as they just announced specs for this monster. Wow. Check out some photos here. You can also see all of the specs on the PS3 here, and on the Xbox 360 here.

In short, it looks like both will be incredible machines with gorgeous graphics and insane clock speeds. Both are going wireless with the controllers, both will be backwards compatible with their namesake predecessors, both will have hard drives (although they may be optional)

To me, the Sony sounds like a better machine — blueray discs, bluetooth controllers, more ports than necessary (2 HDMI outs!), native 1080p (what?!). However I’m a little spooked by the new controllers, and I don’t know anything about their online strategy. Xbox live will be tough to top. Yep, it’s going to be a tough decision.

For drooling purposes, take a look at a video for the upcoming title Killzone or an offroad racer called Motor Storm for the PS3 and get an idea of what these machines are capable of. This is actual gameplay!!

The PS3 will be out in Spring of ’06 while the Xbox 360 will be out this November. Oh, and one more tidbit… Bill Gates himself was quoted saying that Halo 3 will launch the day that the PS3 is launched, as if the decision needed to be harder.

You had me at “2 HDMI outs!”. But the only hesitation to me is the HD-DVD/BluRay thing (and whether they can reach an agreement). Otherwise, sign me up!

    “native 1080p (what?!)”…exactly.

Yeah, I’m nervous about Sony using the PS3 as a bet in the HD-disc format wars. That alone has me leaning to Xbox… and that’s coming from a happy PS2 owner.

Jon, doesn’t that only worry you if you plan on using the PS3 for more than just a gaming console? The Xbox won’t have a HD-DVD either, so it’s not like you’re commited, right? The games could come on frisbees if they deliver on these promises and the games look as good as they’re looking in these videos. ;-)

Even if blu-ray fails and it devolves into a proprietary Sony PS3 media kinda thing, it’s still pretty capable. Since the PS3 is backward compatible, developers don’t HAVE to develop on a blu-ray, right? They can do regular DVDs? Heck I dunno. Like I said, it’s gonna be a tough decision.

If you get a PS3 and Motor Storm, DJ and I are going to move in with you. I’m not asking. I’m telling you.

We have that spare bedroom…the futon is quite comfortable. :)

I’d say that another NetNite would be in order.
