Eckstein and Cabrera

David Eckstein

So there were probably a few tears when David Eckstein was released in the off season, and my family was among the biggest fans of the little shortstop who could seemingly do everything the all-stars could do. Naturally, he found a new gig with a contender, the St. Louis Cardinals where he’ll do fine. But what did we get in return? Why the heck did we give up a great shortstop who hustled on every play, after all, he was a fan favorite? I actually don’t have the answer to this one. I was worry to see Ecky go to another team, and I’m sure it’ll come back to haunt us later on… But that’s not what this is about.

Orlando Cabrera

This is about the guy we signed to take Ecky’s place. Orlando Cabrera, aptly nicknamed “OC” to fit his new surroundings. Some of you know that I’ve been following the Expos for a few years and when I had the rare opportunity to catch them on TV their shortstop made a pretty big impression on me. He always seemed to have a big hit, or a huge defensive play at the right time. Last season when the Red Sox picked him up to help them win their storied championship (don’t know if you’ve heard), he had some HUGE games and came through in the clutch time and time again.

So while Angel fans should miss Eckstein, they shouldn’t discount the new guy, as he’s a great player and will do great things for the halos.

Yeah, Eckstein is the shiznizfizbin, even if he did have the self-proclaimed worst hair on the team. Besides, you can’t make an “OC” with thundersticks. Well, you can but you’d have to pop ‘em first.
