Painted Lady Migration

If you’re in Southern California, look out the window, or jsut look up in the sky. You’ll probably see some butterflies fluttering by. It’s pretty amazing, especially today as there are thousands of these guys migrating North right now. What are they migrating to? Heck if I know, maybe a gigantic windshield in Canada? I guess I didn’t read that far… but I’m sure Jason can throw more facts about this phenomenon our way (Jason, please do!). I thought I’d point it out as it’s pretty remarkable, and it just felt right since I’ve recently been revelaed as a girl.
Read more about the Painted Lady Migration here, but in short, these guys migrate North when the weather warms up after we’ve had a lot of rain. This year certainly qualifies!

March 30th, 2005 at 3:09 pmDid you know that there is a butterfly farm in Houston? And they are attracted to color so certain butterflies will follow you depending on what you are wearing..

March 31st, 2005 at 4:57 amI walked right through a big old batch of ‘em yesterday. I’ve never seen that before. It was kinda cool. They’re probalby just looking for food. When there’s a lot of rain there’s a lot of plants. They build up a big population (each female lays about 20-30 eggs) because there’s lots to eat and after a couple of generations they run out of food. Then they gotta go look for more. Or somebody’s chasing them.

March 31st, 2005 at 8:05 amI was trying to go to the Home Depot the other day up on the corner and it was like Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Butterflies”. I read a local news article that some students at some local college did a “quick study” and found about 3,000 butterflies passing per hour (not sure how big an area that counted).
