Microsoft is finally talking about their next ‘box. IGN is covering GDC 2005, the Gaming Developer’s Conference, and the story of Xbox 2 is starting to be told. They have some articles up about the news coming out of the conference, but probably the most interesting is the explanation and screen shots of the “gamer cards” from the Xbox 2 Live interface, and the fact that developer determined in-game music will be pretty much non-existent, freeing up gamers to listen to whatever they want when they play…
Custom playlists — This feature eliminates the need for developers to support custom music in games. The guide instantly connects players to their music so they can listen to their own tracks while playing all their favorite next-generation Xbox games.
Microsoft explains that core features of the Xbox guide will operate at the chip level and in essence be built-in to the new Xbox, freeing developers to focus on the games themselves.
The Xbox guide features emphasize Microsoft’s positioning of the next Xbox system as an entertainment device designed to work with other media, like digital music or online communication — rather than just a game console.
They’re hinting at some kinda LAN accessible audio streaming here, but they aren’t coming out and saying it. All looks great so far, but this is only the beginning of the information, we’ll see how it goes from here.
