To Infinity — And Beyond!

Monday night Monique and I went on Disneyland’s newest attraction, Buzz Lightyear: Astro Blasters. It’s a cool ride, one that anyone who loves video games (guilty!) will dig riding over and over again.
The story goes something like Buzz needs your help because the evil Emperor Zurg is trying to steal all of the batteries in the galaxy or something. So we guests, as honorary Space Rangers, need to shoot anything with a Z target on it with our handy dandy little guns that are mounted on the ride vehicle.
You can see where you’re shooting because you see the little red dot where you missed. So you end up pulling the trigger a bazillion times in trying to shoot everything. The ride isn’t all that long, and if it’s interrupted at all (I think this is the case, anyway) you score is zeroed out since having extra time while the ride is stopped for someone to get special attention getting on or off would be unfair for the high score list… yadda yadda yadda… You get the idea. Our scores were zeroed out both times we went on it. wah!
Later on this Summer people visiting the Disneyland.com site online will be able to play “with” the people at Disneyland on the attraction. The online Guest will play a similar shoot’em up game and the better their score, the more special, more valuable targets light up for the players in the park (or something like that), giving everyone involved a better chance at a high score. That’s a “connected attraction” and it’s just the beginning!
Check out these two space cadets in these photos!

March 8th, 2005 at 9:49 amSorry… that should be “ride operator”. Or is it “Attraction Technician”? Or take a play from Apple’s book – “Ride Genius!”
