Netflix

What’s all this hub bub about some internet movie thing where you can get movies delivered to your door an never have to pay late fees?
Yeah. I’m late to the party, I know. But heck I always am when it comes to movies. So it’s high time that we tried out this Netflix thing. As some of you know we don’t get out to the movies that much, but we have a pretty decent setup here for that kinda thing, so watching them at home is quite nice. So in our 3rd week of Netflix we’ve watched 7 movies. I think we’re over the pace we have to be to make it worthwhile. I break it down like this: It costs $22 a month for Netflix for unlimited movies (checking 3 out at a time) and free postage with a 3 day turn around time for returning/receiving movies. Compare that to renting 6 movies at Blockbuster for $3.95 each, then factor in the added bummer of having to drive to blockbuster and hope they have what you’re looking for. So I figure I watch 5-6 movies through Netflix a month and it’s a better deal.
You wanna try it? I can get you your first month free. They sent me this link to give to friends, and you’re all my friends, right? Of course you are.
Most recently we got Band of Brothers: Disc 1, Ghost World, and the original Manchurian Candidate (okay, that’s some diverse taste). All of them were great! Maybe I’ll have more time to post movie reviews or something in the future if a certain movie strikes me that way.

September 9th, 2004 at 9:48 amThe way you did your math is exactly the thing that got me into it, plus we didn’t have the expense of premium cable channels or other TV-related monthly fees. So for us, it was a no-brainer after thinking about it for 10 seconds. We love it.
Since then, we’ve gotten no less than five other families into it just by describing our own experiences.

September 11th, 2004 at 12:30 amI did the Netflix thing a long time ago and loved it. We stopped it when Jaden was born and now that he has a longer attention span for movies we might start it up again.
Loved Ghost World! Got it as a gift and just ate it up! Another great performance by Buscemi! THe original Manchurian Candidate is great too (I even like the remake just not as much as the original), and I haven’t seen Band of Brothers all the way through. I caught some of the episodes when they aired originally on HBO.

What do you guys think about Blockbuster’s version of the Netflix service? It’s cheaper by $2/month, and they also give you 2 free in-store movie rentals if you get the urge to get a movie on an whim.

September 13th, 2004 at 12:31 am“Band of Brothers” is the best mini-series I’ve ever seen. I would say that it should be required viewing in all High School history classes (including the documentary on the last disc).
I thought the Blockbuster thing was $30 which would make it $8 more than Netflix. I might be wrong. All I know is that some friends had been doing the BB thing and once they heard about Netflix, they switched and haven’t looked back. Don’t you still have to drive to a store and pick-up drop off DVDs on the BB thing? I dunno.

September 13th, 2004 at 9:50 amI think that’s another thing BB has going… no, check this one out… $19.99/month, the same groovy free shipping/envelope goodness that netflix has, a two week trial just like Netflix has, AND the added 2 in-store renatls if you even have to have a movie RIGHT NOW. Seems like a better deal to me. the only thing I don’t see BB having that Netflix has is the ability to add movies to your queue that aren’t yet out on DVD. It appears both are “quit at any time” kinda deals, so I guess it’d be easy to test the waters.

September 13th, 2004 at 11:48 amI’ve been very happy with Netflix so far. I love the queue, so I wouldn’t want to change to BB if they didn’t have that. I just keep adding to my little heart’s content…and really like that I can change the order, depending on how I feel. This way I don’t need to keep track of the movies I want to see…it’s all done and waiting for me.

September 13th, 2004 at 5:56 pmmonique, BB still has the Que (and maybe even a better way to re-order it, as Netflix makes this difficult). But Netflix gives you the ability to add movies to your queue that are still in the theaters, or that aren’t out on DVD yet. I though this was a cool feature, but not a must have.

September 14th, 2004 at 1:59 pmOh, ok…well putting movies that haven’t been released yet is a valuable feature to me. I suppose I could live without it, but I always suffer from, “now that I can put down what I want, I can’t think of any of them” syndrome that often hits me at the most inopportune moments. I’m supposed to take ginkobiloba or something for this, right?
