Jesus Christ Superstar

jesusIn looking for Hi-definition programming to Tivo, we often look to the HD Movie Channel (the one that comes with the HD package on DirecTV. We go through it maybe once a week and see what we should record the next week. This last week we selected some and after we got home from a huge and tiring day of helping a friend move we saw that Jesus Christ Superstar had been recorded that day.

Both of us had never seen it, so we hit play and watched it. I gotta say this movie is funny. I know that’s probably not its intention — well, not originally — but it was made in the 70′s it has that disco flavor to it, and that’s just laughable. The story is pretty much on par with what I know of the one from the good book, but there’s a lot missing too. Also, since the whole script is sung, it’s really interesting how it flows and regular conversation is handled. My friends and I tried to make rock’n roll happen by using random Bible as passages as lyrics once, and it ended up being funny too. Songs like “Hey-sanna Ho-sanna, ” “what’s the Buzz,” and “This Jesus Must Die” have more comedic value than they should by the sounds of them.

While it certainly gives you a funny feeling laughing so hard at an interpretation of a the story of Jesus, it’s certainly worth the rental. I would imagine this would be especially fun in a group setting. Go check it out and let me know what you think of it.

    I had a Fine Arts Teacher in college who designed a set for a school production of this play. It was a giant mouth – the teeth were a bridge. It was very strange…

    You may be getting it confused with the other popular play of that time, “Jesus Christ Dentist” ;-)

    Hey, Jesus Christ Superstar is great! In fact, I have a party every year (usually on Good Friday) and we watch JCS as we eat BBQ and drink beer.
