Squashed the throttle bug

At least it should be squashed. Let me know if you have any problem posting a comment here immediately after you’ve posted a comment on Arlen’s site. This was a problem with one of the Spam aids built into the software getting confused about time zones. Should be fixed now.

Sorry to all of you who suffered through it.

Yay! Thanks! Now you’ll hear from me more often, let’s hope.

So, why is it that the people we don’t want to post a million times on our sites can, but those that are our friends cannot?

Is there some secret that (insert name of salty-canned-meat)-ers know?

Actually there’s really no protection from the salty meat canners. There are preventative measures, but nothing that totally stops it. Not sure how wordpress deals with it, but I’m sure we’ll find out someday.

I did add a few things that should keep it to a minimum recently. We’ll see how it goes.

You can set your comments to be moderated (meaning they require approval before appearing) in WP. I don’t do this for normal stuff, but I have it set to require approval on comments posted to old posts. A lot of the spammers find an old post in your blog’s history thinking you’ll not notice it. I don’t remember setting this up… I’m thinking it’s an automatic part of WP 1.2, but it sends me an e-mail for posts that are old (not sure the threshold – maybe 30 days) and I can just click a link in the e-mail to delete them and they never see the light of day.

It’s also part of why I use the “fives” tab on my site… I can see quickly what’s getting posted.

We usually catch the old posts by our Latest Comments by section, but that’s kind of cool to have to approve comments to old posts. How sad it would be for all of Joe’s Aspen Soda following.
