The Darkness

The Darkness | Men What Do Rock, BabyYou guys hip to these gents? This band out of the UK really truly thinks they’re 80′s bad-ass rockers… hair and all! I’ve been meaning to post about them for some time, ever since I heard “Get your hands off my Woman” and wasn’t sure what to think of it. In some ways I thought it rocked, in other ways I thought it was a joke. But either way I couldn’t stop listening to it when it came on. So I’ve decided I like the few songs I’ve heard. It’s weird because the lead singer’s voice is all over the place, but it’s not bad singing, and the guitar licks are pretty good for that genre.

But the songs aren’t where the fun stopped back in the hair band days, and it’s most certainly not all there is to The Darkness. Oh no. It’s all about showmanship. I hear that these guys have quite a cult following too. People dressing up like them, impersonating them, covering their songs!!! What the?

You NEED to check out these videos:
I Believe in a Thing Called Love
Get Your Hands Off My Woman

Be sure you see both of them as one’s a live concert type deal and the other…. well, just check it out. I’m sure before long you’ll be torn with the decision… are they REALLY good… or REALLY horrible? I’m interested to know what you think. If you want more, check out their predictably named site, thedarknessrock.com.

Dan gave me the album, I think at your house at Christmas time. I remember e-mailing him and saying, “WTF?!? These guys are ’80s glam rockers but with cussing.” I categorized them as a novelty act. They can come hard with all kinds of earnestness about what they do, kind of like Manowar, but it’s still a joke to me… one that I can chuckle at and then move on. Manowar, on the other hand… well… maybe I just “get it” or something. But I like Manowar much better (perhaps because of the musicianship).

As for these guys being some kind of “original” act because of what they do? Uh… do I need to mention Manowar again? Unlike Manowar, these guys became the fancy of some marketing execs, it seems.

Oh yeah, they have the funny factor way up over ManOWar. I can’t say for sure, but I think these guys realize they’re filling a stereotype, and filling it to the fullest. ManOWar is kinda creepy because they take their identity very seriously. Sure they’re talented, but creepy.

In the end it’s more funny than anything, and I’m not gonna run out and buy it, but for some reason I’m not turning the station when it comes on either.

I just realized that the logo in the image here looks pretty similar to Coca Cola’s. huh.

One of my students mentioned The Darkness to me after I played Iron Maiden one morning to wake the class up. He was the only person to manage to get a D this semester. I checked out the web site, but was not interested in looking very closely. So they may truly rock, but I don’t (& won’t, for the time being) know it.

Arlen, I figured you’d be all over this, seeing that you’re a fan of Metal Shoppe and all.

After seeing the video for “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” am I the only one who thinks the bassist kinda looks like Arlen with a fu-manchu? I’ve been sitting on this question for months now.

I just read the post by Lee and wanted to add that what I’ve heard of Muse is awesome! They’re played on indie 103.1 frequently.
