Movable Type 3.0

Hmm.. I think I’m let down. Movable Type, the set of scripts I use to run this here blog (and a few others) just announced their latest version. I was really looking forward to a lot of the features I was hoping would be included in this new version. But what was announced is more of a package deal. And the prices went way up (from free, I guess anything’s a big hike) so much so that I’d have to pay about $60 to get the same kinda setup I have now, and that’s after a discount because I’ve donated in the past. Not to mention that I was hoping that MT3 would have some cool features like better mobile blogging capabilities, integrated spam protection features and all that who-ha.

So, like a lot of movabletype users that want a free, flexible, and popular (good community base for additions), I think I’m gonna start looking for a replacement. My buddy Jon just hopped on the WordPress bandwagon, which looks promising. I’m also checking out Drupal, Nucleus, and some others.

I’m not sure when I’m going to have time to do a full on migration, but it’ll probably some with a site re-design which is long overdue. We’ll see how it goes. I’m pretty strapped down with DVD projects for now, so depending on how I spend my time in the near future, it may be Movabletype 2.x for awhile.

Wow! I didn’t realize that they were going to be charging for the new version. And why would they charge $70 for a personel use license?

Looks like it’s time to move on for my site also. Guess I get to redesign my site also.

I guess I should have said that there’s a free version still, but it’s pretty limiting. Plus you can still run 2.x at no charge, but there won’t be any more releases for the 2.x version.

Yeah I was checking out the free version and it does sound limiting. I need to do something new with my website anyways.

I really like WordPress… you don’t have to know PHP or MySQL, but if you do know them, then WordPress becomes very powerful – only limited by your imagination and coding skillz. You can let your imagination soar in the WordPress forums and maybe someone with the coding skillz will take it on and produce a plug-in.

By the way, Joe, your site is fine… don’t hurry on that. I’m more excited about what DVD projects you might be working on.

yeah, I’m excited about those projects too! I’m about to wrap one up, just need to do the DVD and insert art.

I do like some of WordPress’ features, and you’re right 1.2 should bring even more, but I don’t think I’ll migrate to it until it can support multiple blogs natively. I gotta watch out for my peeps!

I did install it (sooo painless!) and poke around and manage to get something that I couldn’t get with movable type going, a mobile picture blog that actually works. So I may incorporate that into the existing site, but the whole thing will wait for awhile.
