FPS sequels!

The games everyone seems to be waiting for these days is Halo 2 (Xbox) and Half Life 2 (PC). These games are looking INCREDIBLE. If you haven’t seen what they look like, you need to visit a couple of places:
Halo 2: As you watch this, pay close attention to the sound, I know its compressed, but Halo has the best weapon sounds of any game I’ve ever played.
Single Player footage
Half-Life 2: If you watch only one of these, make it Traptown. Amazing.

Halo 2 now has a release date of November 9th! Knowing how dates slip all over the place with these things, we can say it’ll be out sometime before Christmas, but I wouldn’t count on it in early November. We’ll see. Half-Life 2 will be out when it’s done. But the speculation is that it will be out for the Holidays too. There’s a great write-up on the multiplayer experience of Halo 2 (it doesn’t tell all the details that we’re all dying to know about how it will interact with Xbox live, but it does have some great info about gameplay).
Now, until we get to November 9th, and whenever Half-Life 2 is going to come out. There’s always the latest flavor of UT! No, it’s not Arlen’s school of choice… it’s a new look at an old game. I installed the demo for Unreal Tournament 2004 the other day and played a few rounds. This game is pretty fun, and has a lot of what made the original great. for those of you that loved that one as much as I did, but were kinda let down at the last revision, take a look at this one. The cool thing about UT 2004 is that they finally got multi-platform online multi-player right. If you’re on a mac, and you connect to a PC server with all PC players and you don’t have the map, it downloads for you and you join the game. Easy as pie. Nice job Epic and Macsoft!

I played Halo on the PC – didn’t care for it. Too repetitious. But I’ll try anything once, so I’ll give Halo 2 a whirl.
UT2004 is GREAT! I played the demo of UT2003 and passed on it – sucked. But UT2004 is a godsend by comparison, especially the new BF1942-esque Conquest game-type.

May 13th, 2004 at 10:39 amThe links to the vids didn’t work as well on a PC when I tested them at work. Sorry about that. I’ll fix that in the future, it’s just gotta be a bit more complex.
Halo reminded me a lot of the first Half-Life, Bungie took the time when they built it to care about things other than opening a door to a bunch of monsters. The story was really intertwined with the combat, and you knew what you were fighting for. Kinda like Half-Life. The 2nd Halo should be more of the same, but with a TON of extra features, especially in the online area.
