HD for me!

I had a crazy experience with DirecTV this past week. I say crazy, and not good or bad, because it started out bad and ended good… really good actually.

I’ve been monitoring the HD DirecTV DVR with Tivo that’s coming out soon, and learned of a great deal to get my satellite system upgraded to an HD capable one. This includes a new dish with a triple head thing on it (built in multi-switch too!), an OTA (Over the Air) antenna, professional installation which involved relocating my current DirecTiVo upstairs, and a brand new HD DirecTV receiver. I got all this for $199. Some have been able to get it for $99, but I don’t pay enough each month to DirecTV to qualify for that deal. Oh, I had to sign up for a year of the HD channel package too, but it’s cheap compared to most packages. $10.99/month for the 6 or 7 HD channels in the pack. But with the OTA antenna I get all of the major networks’ HD broadcasts too.

The installer came out last Wednesday and I took a “work from home” day so that I could be here when he got here. He was WAY late, then when he got here he was not willing to get on the roof, not willing to put the dish anywhere he didn’t think would get a signal. Then when we finally CONVINCED him to install it in a certain place, he went to the truck to discover he FORGOT the dish! WHAT??? That fool’s name was Jerry. I called DirecTV to reschedule the appt until Saturday afternoon. A new guy named Robert showed up and was more than willing to turn the outside of my house into his own private jungle gym and he did a marvelous job with the install! This man’s name was Robert. Long story short… ask for Robert.

So my plan is this: I’m going to buy the new HD DVR receiver when it comes out in April, and then turn around and sell this new HD receiver that came with this deal. It’s been selling for around $400 on ebay, so I think I can turn $200 profit on this thing. Of course, that $200 will just go toward the HD Tivo dealie, but hey, that’s what upgrading is about.

I’ll keep you all posted on how it goes. Until that new receiver comes out, I have the new HD receiver in the livingroom and the Tivo upstairs in our bedroom. I’m not sure if I can last a month without my Tivo in the livingroom. Something tells me I’ll try to get both receivers working in there at the same time until the new one’s out. We’ll see. I sure enjoyed what I saw of my first HD NHL game this weekend though. WOW!

A Clockwork Orange sounded and looked great on the HD movie station last night.

What a great way to watch Kubrick.
