A whole new world

Nope, the new TV isn’t just for DVD and DirecTivo… Gaming is a new experience on this thing, but not only because it’s gigantic. A lot of the new games that come out have widescreen capabilities, and even HD features! I played a game of ESPN Football the other night and it was similar to the experience I had watching Super Bowl on Sunday — breathtaking! I think I even saw Janet JAckson exposing herself on the sideline. I popped in Soul Caliber 2 last night and while the game play isn’t in widescreen (what the?), the cut scenes are not only widescreen, but Hi-def 720p! And behold, just about every game for the Xbox has Dolby Digital sound, a bunch of which have in-game 5.1 mixes!
Anyway, my point is that the devlopers of the systems as well as the games are paying attention to the tech advances and it’s a good thing. Of course, sometimes they leave out stuff (no 16:9 mode in one, no hi-def in another) but I’m sure sometime soon they’ll all be pretty similar in how they’re built.
A great link to keep all of this mayhem straight is hdgames.net. This site, while crude to look at, is a publicly driven database of games and what great features they offer. It’s a great tool to see who’s developing what.
I cannot WAIT for Halo 2 now.

February 5th, 2004 at 2:50 pmIf you’re the patient type, or you don’t have $200 laying around for a game system, you may wanna wait a year and get a PS3, or wait 2 years and get a Xbox Next, or whatever MS is calling it these days. I think we can assume that these upcoming systems and the games for them will have more bells and whistles as far as HD goes.
Of course, if you’re not that patient. The stuff coming out now sure is pretty. I’d probably recommend a PS2 for the wider range of games in the library (more than just shooters and fighters), or the Xbox for playing those “after the kids go to bed” games. Right now I’m playing my Xbox more because the games I have are still new to me, and Xbox is capable of resolutions above 480p, the PS2 can’t hang at 720p or 1080i just yet.
