Patriots won, and the livingroom is done!

That last piece of “furniture” that we were waiting for came just in time for Super Bowl Sunday! On Friday we picked up a brand new LG 52″ LCD RPTV! This completes the changes we’re making to the livingroom and really finished off the transitional style that we were going for in there. The room has a sort of tech feel but still stays comfortable, which is just the right sweet spot for us. the sound and picture is so great I’ll be going to the movies less than I already do, which ain’t much as it is!
On Sunday we had a few friends over to watch the game, eat some food, and play some poker. While the Patriots took home their second title in 3 years, it was Bryan who was the big winner at the table. He’s got a mean poker face. The High Definition reception for the game was amazing. At one point the coach actually put me in for a few plays! Between the friends, the Poker, the Super Bowl, and the Nacho Cheese Doritos with Guacamole dip (I don’t care if I’m the only one that likes it), I was in heaven.

February 3rd, 2004 at 8:15 amCoolness! Tell me where I can read about the TV. I’m hankerin for a big TV but don’t much like the peripheral darkness that projection TV’s give, and Jon tells me that plasma is not the way to go. So I’m at a loss! Help me out with a link, wouldja?

February 3rd, 2004 at 10:24 amWell, this is really a rear projection TV, but the way they do the “guns” now, they can make the cabinets a lot different, they aren’t big black boxes anymore, which was another draw for us. You still get some darkening with peripheral viewing, but it has a 130 degree viewing radius. It’s brightest point being of course in dead center.
We got a great deal on this one, but it all came down to actually viewing the TVs to decide which one we liked best. The deal didn’t weight in much at the end as we would have picked this one despite it. It was perfect for what we needed as far as inputs and features go. There aren’t many reviews online about ours since it’s REALLY new (LG just re-branded their Zenith line of big screens and released these newer models), we probably got one of the first off the assembly line. But you can see the official line at the LG site:
http://us.lge.com/products/models/RU-52SZ30.htmlI agree with Jon on the Plasmas, they’re beautiful, but too expensive and the absolute shelf life scares me.

February 3rd, 2004 at 2:13 pmHigh Definition is great, but stay away from Toshiba’s line. The picture is great and the picture options are wonderful, but that’s only if it is working. The darn thing went out AGAIN last week for us. So the Super Bowl was watched on a glorious 20 inch Sony!
But to see DVDs on a High Definition monitor with a progressive scan player just knocked my socks off. Here’s hoping HD-DVD or BluRay really take it to the next level of picture quality.

February 3rd, 2004 at 5:05 pmHey Joe. It does look like a great set. Am I correct that the hi-def tuner came with it? Got to say that our 55 inch Mitsubishi with the built in hi-def really brought in a great Super Bowl show again. Of course when I go back to view the recorded show on my TIVO it’s only in digital mode.
I just ordered Judy her new vehicle. Acura MDX in Redrock Pearl with the Nav system. Been looking for some time now. It’s supposed to come in mid-month.Don

February 3rd, 2004 at 6:15 pmNo, no Hi-def tuner built in. We borrowed a tuner from Monique’s work for the big game. We’re holding off on that until we have regular programming in HD with Tivo/PVR functionality. So the eye candy is saved for DVDs and gaming for now.
Sweet car! They improved the MDX quite a bit this year. Everytime I pass by one in a parking lot I look in to see if they got the nav. You won’t regret that. I couldn’t live without mine, and have since forgotten the way to every place I need to go.
I wish we could have afforded one of those for Monique. We love our Tribute, but would have really liked that one.

February 4th, 2004 at 8:52 amCongrats on the new MDX! Beautiful car! You really can’t beat that nav system either. I miss that in the Tribute. We’re actually having to go to Costco and get a Thomas Guide!

February 5th, 2004 at 8:35 amSweet TV. For folks like Arlen that wanna learn more… look into LCD and DLP. Those are the best of the new technologies. The ol’ CRT RPTV (what you’d call the traditional big screens) need a big room with lots of depth. Wouldn’t have worked in Joe’s living room. So good choice with the thinner LCD. And as Joe mentioned, stay away from plasmas because they lose their plasmability over time and go dead.
I haven’t looked recently into the progress on an HD TiVo. I have the built in tuner, but because we timeshift our viewing so much, we rarely take advantage of it. The Super Bowl was the first time in a few months that I had the HD going. If I was a serious TV watcher, I’d be majorly drooling over an HD TiVo set up. As a fan of gadgets and electronics, I’m still drooling… just not so much, I guess.

March 28th, 2004 at 6:29 pmJoe,
I ran across this link on the web… I’m looking for a 50″ LCD and have narrowed it down to the Hitachi 50v500 and this/your LG 52″. This is the RU52SZ30 correct?
I have not found much info on the LG and would like to hear your thoughts especially now that you have had it a few months.
Much appreciated,
Ray
