The Power of X?

This is going to take some explanation. I got my Playstation 2 (Thanks Monique!) a couple of years ago when it was the only next generation console around. I’ve been really happy with the games I’ve played on it, and would recommend it because of the huge library of games, a lot of which are unique in some way to the PS2, and because of the controller.

So I just bought an Xbox.

When the Xbox came out I didn’t think much of it, since I already had a PS2 and there weren’t much in the way of games yet for the Xbox. Sure it had a hard drive in it and a built-in network adapter for broadband, but not much else, and I wasn’t going to go buy a 2nd system for $300 just for Halo! The future was suspect for the big heavy black box, so the time wasn’t right. Plus it had a controller that was just uncomfortable for me. Some liked it, but I thought it was much too heavy and awkward.

Time has passed, there are a bunch of quality games out for the Xbox (and the Xbox only in some cases) a lot of which are online capable. They ditched the big controller for a smaller version, their game library has grown, and the price has dropped. So the time was right, the deal was right, and now it’s what is keeping me up late.

I’m enjoying the newer, smaller controllers a lot. Although they’re not quite as nice as the PS2 controllers in two ways: The 4 shoulder buttons for the PS2 give you better control options in certain games. Microsoft depends on the blank and white buttons and the two triggers to do what the 4 shoulder buttons do on the PS2, and I don’t like this as much, but it’s only a problem on some games.

Speaking of games, some that I’m really enjoying are Crimson Skies, Halo (okay, so I’m really late to this party), Star Wars: Knights of the Republic, and a few others. I took the opportunity to trade some of my old PS2 games in for some used Xbox games and I made out. I now have 9 Xbox games!

Not to be lost in the gaming goodness is me finding my favorite Hockey game in a long time. One of the games I traded in was NHL 2004 because like ESPN Hockey this year, it tries too hard and the control schemes are similar to brain surgery, and brain surgery has no place in a hockey video game. So I picked up NHL Hitz Pro and it’s everything I want! Simple to play, easy to pick up, goals aren’t too hard to score, but there aren’t outrageous scores, fantasy drafts, franchise mode, funny announcers, and more!
