Album Review – Guster: “Keep it Together”

Guster - Keep It TogetherI’m not great at album reviews, so don’t be too critical. I know that I like something so I can say that over and over, but that wouldn’t do anything for you, so let me see if I can describe the album to ya…

First off, a little background:
Monique found Guster, I think she heard a song on the radio a few years ago. I wasn’t too interested at first for some reason, then I finally sat down and listened and man, that whole album (Lost and Gone Forever) is good. And as we all know, it’s a great thing when you like every single song on a disc.

Guster’s sound on this new one, “Keep it Together” is still really clean and unabrasive. There’s not a lot of distorted guitars or throaty vocals, just nice tight vocals and really solid music. This album is great. These guys really know how to write music! It’s got a bit of everything. Track 2, “Careful” is probably my early favorite and reminds me of “fa fa” from their previous album, followed by track 3, “Amsterdam” which is a great too… then there’s track 10, “Red Oyster Cult” which is an upbeat diddy that is a lot of fun. In the category of odd, there’s a track called Silence that’s 30 seconds long and it’s just that, silence.

Picking out songs is tough again on this one. I haven’t listened to it too much yet (only 1 1/2 times through and some was at work today) but I think it’s as good as their last album, which is saying a lot. I’d buy it again if I hadn’t already.

They’re playing the Wiltern on Nov. 8 and I’m thinking about going.

You’ll have to swing by Sofa U Love! That’s in the Wiltern neighborhood, if I remember right . . . since I left CA, you know, I’ve forgotten everything about California, just like Gordon.

I’m gonna stop by the iTunes Music Store and buy “Silence” for a buck . . .

The last time I went the Wiltern, it was being renovated. The only thing it had on its marquee was “Rocktober.” Good times.
